The Secret to Efficient Chip-sizing
Fracture Chips Along Fiber Lines
The Jeffrey Chip-sizerTM Reduces Shear Perpendicular to the Grain (The Main Cause of Fines)
The most significant issue in designing the Jeffrey Chip-sizer™ rechipper was to reduce the chips and generate low levels of pins and fines. To accomplish this, Jeffrey borrowed technology from its coal crushers where minimizing fines is essential.
Jeffrey’s Chip-sizerTM hammers are in effect a cross between swing and fixed hammers, in that each hammer swings on one bar but a second bar limits how far it extends from the rotor. It extends to a point much less than perpendicular to the rotor and more easily “floats” away from the material on impact, giving a “soft touch” that minimizes pins and fines.
|
These hammers also permit the rotor to turn at lower RPM than in a typical hammermill because their unique shape reduces the centrifugal force required to extend them.
In addition to impact with the hammers, the oversize chips are reduced in the action between the hammers and screen grates.

The special grates utilize Jeffrey’s Slant-Flow™ technology, with the bars inclined into the direction of material flow and having a beveled edge. The net effect of the special hammers and grates is that chips are fractured along fiber lines. This maintains acceptable fiber lengths and minimizes production of fines.
